Simplify

Q:  Simplify:  3x – 2 [-3(x – 1)] + x

A:  OK, we always start with the inner-most parentheses when possible:

3x – 2 [-3(x – 1)] + x

I am going to multiply the blue into the red to get:

3x – 2 [-3x + 3] + x

Now, I am going to multiply the blue into the red again:

3x – 2 [-3x + 3] + x = 3x +6x – 6 + x

Now that there are no more parentheses, I can combine the x’s together to get:

10x – 6
